I just got back from two weeks in the UK where I have been following Wimbledon closely – especially the women’s tennis (obviously!). The fitness and athleticism of the top female players is impressive, especially that of the William’s sisters, Venus and Serena, who reaching the women’s final and won the women’s doubles.
What struck me most was how closely their performance relates to the demands of squash – agility, speed, power, endurance, and mental toughness. The longer rallies in the women’s game make the physiological demands more similar than the men’s (average 3-shot rallies on grass). There are some good examples on Youtube.
If you get a chance this summer make sure to take advantage of any opportunity to watch the fine athletes play in person or on TV – very motivating!
