Smith Squash Loses a Squeaker to Higher Ranked Vassar!

Well – we (ranked 29th) almost did it – take a look at the scorecard and you will see that all matches were pretty close (or we won them), but Vassar (ranked 22nd) squeaked it out 6-3!  Thanks to Jane Parker and the Vassar for driving 2.5 hours on a week night to play us!

It is Julia Child Day at Smith – with special Julia Child Recipes in all of the houses (best rated kitchens in the country!) – so not too many fans!

Here is one of our top fans – Smith College Athletic Director Lynn Oberbillig:

Take a look at the score card – matches were close!

6-3 for Vassar

While most teams have not even started their season, this was Smith’s 4th match – one scrimmage and three tight, close matches (Smith 6 – Northeastern 3, Wellesley 5 – Smith 4, and a scrimmage with Wesleyan – all matches tight) – a perfect schedule for improvement!

Here is Smith #1 and Co-Captain Meg Oliverio – she is just starting to work on her fitness to compete with these number 1’s!

Here is Smith Coach Tim Bacon’s post-match commentary – he seems pretty pleased with the team:

The team plays next at neighboring Mount Holyoke College (way below Smith (7th in U.S. amongst squash playing colleges!)  in the academic rankings – above Smith for the moment in the squash rankings) this Sunday, November 21, 2010 – Smith plays Tufts at 2:00 and MHC at 4:00.
