The purpose of this blog is to help GROW all of the racquet sports at Smith College via efficient communication:

  • provide access to a highly qualified Faculty advisor (Tim Bacon)
  • increase the number of informal opportunities to learn and play racquet sports
  • increase the number of “for credit” ESS racquet sport courses
  • improve racquet sport facilities
  • improve access to facilities as all athletic groups compete for the College’s Ainsworth Gym Scott Gym and the ITT

The benefits of joining the Smith College Racquet Sport Interest Group:

Faculty Advisor:

Tim Bacon, Dept. of Exercise & Sport Studies: Tim is the world’s greatest racquet sports coach who has taught tennis, badminton, ping pong, racketball and squash to thousands of people – including several world champions – since 1977.  He has an M.A. in Coaching and as recently as 2008 was ranked 22 in the World Racketlon rankings.  He has obtained coaching certification in tennis, racquetball and squash, and is also a Registered Mental Training Consultant and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist.  He has taught tennis, squash, badminton, ping pong and racketball at Smith College since 1994

UPCOMING EVENTS

Introduction to Racquet Sports Course – Non-Credit Sponsored by the Dept. of Exercise & Sport Studies:

Tuesdays 7-8 pm: Sept. 10, 16, 23, 30  All Equipment supplied, wear loose or athletic clothing and preferably some sort of racquet sport or cross-training shoe (running/jogging shoes are not ideal but will be ok at first).  Emphasis will be placed on the learning the basics of all racquet sports by playing the two easiest: Racketball and Ping Pong.  Email Tim to Register for this course:  tbacon@smith.edu

Get Fit Racquet Sports Night:

Held every Wednesday of the Fall semester from 7-8 pm.  No need to register – just drop by!  All equipment supplied and basic instruction provided by Smith Squash Team’s Carly Mellilo.  For beginner to expert.  The entire Get Fit schedule, including Racquet Sports Night can be found here.

Squash Team Tryouts

The Smith College Varsity Squash team is looking for players – no squash experience necessary.  With only three returners this season, there are nine (9) spots open on the team.  Tim Bacon is the team coach – contact him(tbacon@smith.edu)  if you think you would be interested in a “college varsity team” experience.  More information can be found here.
